History of Leadership Jackson

Leadership Jackson was started out of a need for young leaders to replace the community leaders that had assisted the quality of life in Jackson for twenty years. With the current leadership quickly aging a fast track was needed for the younger executives to step into active community roles.

Harbert Alexander and Larry Welch visited several other communities that had leadership programs. None of them were exactly what The Chamber had in mind so they combined the best of all of the ones they visited and created "Leadership Jackson" specifically for our community.

A committee compiled a list that became the curriculum for the program. The retreat was added to the curriculum in later years. The C.O.P.E. program retreat was the latest addition to the curriculum. The C.O.P.E. program exposes people to team building and communication skills.

The committee had two goals in mind when leadership Jackson was created. One being to begin to build a core leadership, training young leaders to get involved and secondly, to identify people and fast track them into leadership. With Leadership Jackson we can claim tremendous success with the development and implementation of this program.
